APPLICATION DEADLINE Sunday June 28 2026 by 11:59pm Atlantic TENTATIVE START DATE September 1 2026 ABOUT THIRD SPACE GALLERY Third Space is a not-for-profit itinerant artist-run centre for contemporary art in Saint John, New Brunswick. We are committed to representing local, regional, and national emerging and professional contemporary artists. Third Space will highlight the work of emerging and established artists who cross disciplines and boundaries in their examinations of contemporary culture. The aim of the Third Space is to facilitate the education, understanding and appreciation of contemporary art at a local, national and international level. It will do this by hosting exhibitions, workshops, residencies, lectures, performances and screenings, as well as by publishing and disseminating materials relevant towards this aim. Since its inception in 2005, Third Space’s vision has been to present exhibitions, installations, multimedia works, and performances that represent the diverse cultural and political issues being discussed by artists today. We strive to create a professional space for artists to exhibit their work and provide a venue for open dialogue to take place. To facilitate the growth of public knowledge of contemporary art and enhance the artistic development of local artists, curators and arts writers, these exhibitions are always accompanied by artist talks and workshops. Third Space’s signature program, THIRD SHIFT, is a contemporary art at night festival that takes place in Uptown Saint John each August. A major motivation for THIRD SHIFT is to provide the broader public with an opportunity to experience contemporary art outside of a traditional gallery space and provide a platform for sharing experiential knowledge. MISSION Third Space is a Saint John-based artist-run centre committed to facilitating the education, understanding, and appreciation of contemporary art at a local, regional, and national level through exhibitions, workshops, screenings, and other activities for which artists receive fair compensation. VISION To provide opportunities, exposure, and fair representation to emerging and established artists in Southern New Brunswick, the traditional unceded territory of the Wolastoqiyik and Mi’kmaq Peoples; to enrich lives through exposure to the arts. MANDATE – To present work that is exploratory, challenging and critical in nature. – To present work that may not be commercially viable. – To encourage exploratory and hybrid curatorial practices. – To develop creative partnerships and collaborations within the community for the advancement of Canadian contemporary art. – To treat artists in a fair and professional manner. – To remunerate artists based on CAR/FAC payment schedules. – To be an open, inviting and inclusive space; everyone is welcome. – To ensure a variety of educational and community-sensitive programming. VALUES – Compensation – Community – Interdisciplinary – Representation JOB DESCRIPTION Third Space Gallery is seeking an experienced and dynamic Executive Director to lead the organization through an exciting period of growth and opportunity. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will provide strategic leadership across all areas of the organization, including financial management, fund development, human resources, operations, and artistic programming. The successful candidate will bring a strong track record of leadership in the not-for-profit sector, ideally within arts and culture, along with sound financial acumen, natural leadership abilities, and a collaborative, community-focused approach. They will thrive in a dynamic, multi-faceted environment and be inspired by the opportunity to support and elevate artists and cultural activity across Uptown Saint John. RESPONSIBILITIES Key responsibilities include: Financial: – Ensure sound financial management of the organization – Develop and manage the annual operating budget – Oversee all financials, including monthly financial reporting, banking, payroll, year-end and financial policy and procedures – Communicate efficiently with accountant during important tax months – Develop and oversee implementation of a comprehensive Annual Fundraising Plan in collaboration with the Board of Directors – Oversee and enhance all fundraising revenue streams, which include public sector grants, individual giving (annual and major gifts), corporate sponsors/partners, wage subsidies, foundation supporters, and special events – Develop and maintain relationships with all key supporters, which include public funders, individual donors, corporate sponsors, and foundations Human Resources: – Hire, train and supervise all staff, contractors, and other service providers – Lead and implement staff performance management and evaluation procedures – Cultivate a positive and collaborative work environment – Advance equity, diversity and inclusion amongst staff Artistic Programming: – Leadership and oversight of all Third Space programming – Develop and maintain new programming in response to our membership and community needs – Organize and oversee one-off public-facing workshops, artist talks, and creative opportunities for Third Space members and the creative community of Saint John Administration & Operations: – Oversee day-to-day operations and administration for the organization – Responsible for maintaining all official records, filings and documents and to ensure compliance with local, provincial and federal regulations Governance & Board Relations: – Work openly and collaboratively with the Board and its committees in advancing Third Space’s strategic objectives – Work with the Board to develop a Strategic Plan to guide the organization’s path forward over the next three to five years – Oversee planning and preparations for the Annual General Meeting in collaboration with the Board Chair Marketing & Communications: – Oversee all external relations, advertising, communications, community engagement and media relations – Maintain the organization’s websites, social media platforms, and communications channels – Create digital graphics, online marketing initiatives, and physical printed media in relation to programming and events – Act as designated Third Space spokesperson, and lead all community engagement and stakeholder consultations – Develop and oversee implementation of an annual strategic Communications Plan in collaboration with the Communications Officer Equity, Diversity & Inclusion: – Lead the development and implementation of an organizational EDI Plan – Ensure EDI practices are followed and implemented through all aspects of Third Space’s programming and operations QUALIFICATIONS The ideal candidate will bring: – Educational experience (diploma or degree) in Visual Arts, Art History, Marketing, Communications, or an equivalent field – Five years operations leadership in the arts and not-for-profit sector – Strong financial management and experience in developing and managing budgets – Demonstrated ability and success in private sector fundraising and public sector grant writing – Strong experience in developing and maintaining relationships with donors and stakeholders – Experience in HR management and leading teams – Experience with developing and managing arts programming and/or festivals – Excellent interpersonal and communications skills – Knowledge/experience in Equity, Diversity and Inclusion policy and practices – Passion for the arts; knowledge of and relationships within the Saint John arts and culture scene is an asset Candidates with relevant, transferable skills who do not exactly meet the criteria above are encouraged to apply!
