Judith Mackin, Karina van der Linden, Jason Fitzpatrick and Chris Lloyd founded The Space in 1997, operating as an artist cooperative until 2000. In 2005, the space reopened as Third Space, an artist-run centre for contemporary art, under the Direction of Chris Lloyd and began to pay fees in accordance with CARFAC.
A major shift took place in 2008, when Third Space moved from a traditional gallery space to a nomadic presence within the city, partnering with professional organizations and businesses to disseminate contemporary art in non-traditional spaces.
