Third Space Gallery presents Float by Svava Thordis Juliusson, a site-specific interactive performance and installation exploring Saint John and its environs.

Part performance, part exhibition, Svava Thordis Juliusson’s upcoming visit to Saint John will result in a sculptural installation anchored at Rockwood Park. Float is part of an ongoing project primarily executed with materials composed of plastic and rope. Juliusson’s project attempts to “gently interfere or augment natural environments and the urban landscape.”

In Saint John, Juliusson will study the city’s geological properties and weather systems, while building on her previous explorations of mapping, transformation and the properties of place. With her findings, Juliusson will create a sculptural installation inspired by the local landscape, which will accompany recent pieces. Float has already begun from Juliusson’s home in Hamilton, Ontario, with research of Saint John’s topography and geologic features.

“I have developed a series of objects with which to articulate a response to Saint John and/or its environs. It is an unfamiliar city, community, and landscape. Therefore, as a starting point for locating and imagining myself in the area from a distance, examined maps – weather maps, historical maps, and topographical maps, and maps of the Saint John River Basin as well as graphs indicating tidal flow,” says Juliusson. “From these maps, and other yet to be discovered references when the work is installed, a narrative about Saint John and I, from which imagined, transformed and abstracted versions of the city emerge.”

Third Space Gallery is pleased to partner with Rockwood Park for this exhibition.
