Entre Quatre Murs is a series of three-dimensional, black and white photographic portraits by Montréal-based artist Nathalie Daoust. The images weave together elements of the everyday to create windows into imaginary worlds.

Through her work Nathalie Daoust creates atmospheres that explore the boundaries between reality and fantasy. In 2005 while in Berlin the artist created the photographic project Entre Quatre Murs where her portraits capture moments of intimacy. In making use of the contrast between Berlin’s pre-World War II interiors and her contemporary subjects she creates an odd time-shift, providing a melancholic feeling of a lost world.

For this theme she has developed a technique of printing various elements of an image on several separate layers of orthochromatic film. By superimposing and reassembling pieces of the image, as well as leaving an ethereal space between each layer, the image is both fractured yet whole. This re-compositing of the image in space works like a transparent puzzle, revealing the unknown, and offering multiple readings into the lives of the subjects.

Third Space Gallery receives annual operating funding from the NB Department of Wellness, Culture and Sport and support from its membership, volunteers, the Telegraph Journal, Picaroons Traditional Ales, T4G, and Punch Productions.

Entre quatre murs est une série de portraits photographiques tridimensionnels de l’artiste montréalaise Nathalie Daoust. Les images en noir et blanc sont tirées des éléments du quotidien; assemblées, elles ouvrent des fenêtres inattendues sur des mondes imaginaires

Nathalie Daoust explore les frontières qui jouxtent le réel et le fantastique. C’est au cours d’un séjour à Berlin en 2005 qu’elle a entamé le projet photographique Entre quatre murs, à travers lequel elle cherche à saisir des moments d’intimité. En se servant du contraste entre les intérieurs berlinois de la période d’avant-Deuxième Guerre mondiale et ses occupants contemporains, Daoust joue sur le décalage temporel pour mettre en scène une atmosphère mélancolique évoquant une époque révolue.

Pour réaliser ces Å“uvres, Daoust a mis au point une technique d’impression par couches des multiples éléments d’une même image, dont chacune est enduite d’une émulsion orthochromatique. En insérant un espace insissable entre chacune des couches, l’artiste réussit à créer une image qui est à la fois fragmentée et entière. Cette reconstitution de la photo d’origine dans un nouveau format fonctionne comme un casse-tête transparent qui révèle l’inconnu et donne lieu à plusieurs interprétations de la vie de ses sujets.
