JOB CALL : Programming Coordinator / Executive Director 

POSITION TYPE : Full-Time / Flexible, 25-40 hours per week.

REMUNERATION : $26,000 per year.

Third Space Gallery is the only artist-run centre in Saint John and works with and within the city’s wider community to produce and present a range of interdisciplinary contemporary art projects and exhibitions. The gallery works with local, national, and international artists to raise the understanding and appreciation of contemporary art through exploratory, challenging, and critical projects that are relevant to residents of Saint John while connecting to larger global conversations.

The aim of the gallery is to facilitate the education, understanding, and appreciation of contemporary art. It does so by hosting exhibitions, workshops, residencies, lectures, performances, and screenings. It also includes publishing materials and hosting THIRD SHIFT, an annual nighttime contemporary public art festival.


Programming: Development and implementation of public programming in collaboration with programming committees, the board, staff, and key partners.

Human Resources: Supervision of summer staff member.

Administration: Grant writing, budgeting, preparing reports, attending board meetings, day-to-day operations.

Membership + Fundraising: Cultivating long-term relationships with the community, coordinating and implementing fundraising initiatives and members’ projects.

Public Outreach: Representing Third Space at public events and meetings as appropriate, both in the region and nationally in collaboration with the Board.

  • Ability to work independently and collaborate with volunteer teams.
  • Relevant experience and education.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and writing skills.
  • Event planning experience.
  • Willingness to be flexible with work schedule including some evenings and weekends.
  • An interest in the challenges and opportunities that this position offers.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English; French would be an asset.
  • Website and design experience would be an asset.

Job Title: Third Shift: Contemporary Art Festival, Festival Associate

Number of Hours Per Week:  30

Wage: $13 per hour

Anticipated Start/End Date: May 15, 2019 – August 25 (approx)


Tasks and Responsibilities

Coordination of THIRD SHIFT art projects: The associate will correspond with the participating artists (15 to 20 projects total) leading up to the event to ensure that each of the artists’ technological requirements are accounted for and that their project location is suitable and ready for installation on the night of the art-after-dark exhibition.

Community outreach: The associate will work with Third Space’s Programming Coordinator to build partnerships with neighbouring community groups and organizations who wish to host or produce art projects for exhibition with the event or host workshops and artist talks. This outreach will be done through email, phone calls and in-person meetings. This may also involve seeking sponsorship opportunities. Event promotion and social media marketing: With guidance from the marketing committee, the associate will be responsible for updating the THIRD SHIFT event website and two social media accounts (Facebook and Instagram) leading up to the event with promotional content.

Volunteer coordination: The associate will be responsible for helping coordinate the THIRD SHIFT volunteers during the festival. This will be done through the development of a volunteer schedule and being available to answer questions and provide guidance.

Other: As this is a creative position, the associate will have the opportunity to use their own skills to contribute to the event. In the past festival associates have had the opportunity to develop their graphic design, photography, public speaking skills, etc.


Field of Study: Arts, Fine Arts, Event Planning, Marketing, Arts Admin, Business, Graphic Design, etc.

Required Skills: Creative, outgoing, ability to work independently, knowledge of the Saint John community and contemporary art an asset. French not required but considered an asset.
