Third Space Gallery extends its contemporary art offerings to the city’s Francophone community

Saint John’s only artist-run-centre is pleased to invite the public to a special presentation in collaboration with the Association Regionale de la Communite Francophone (ARCf). Together we are welcoming Montreal-based performance artist Sophie for a night at Le Faubourg, 125 Prince William Street, September 29th from 7 to 8pm. Castonguay will present an evening of two distinct performance pieces, Je te donne ma parole and Tu m’enlèves les mots de la bouche, which flip the expected role of spectator to that of unwitting performer. In the second piece, the artist and the audience will collaborate on her performance: the audience will read aloud pieces of text or link together words to dictate Castonguay’s actions. The interactive performance allows Anglophones and Francophones alike to become collaborators in an artwork that questions traditional public roles and behaviours.
Castonguay will give an artist’s talk on Saturday, October 1st, from 2-3pm at the Saint John Free Public Library; the talk will delve further into performative and movement based art.
Sophie Castonguay has exhibited across Quebec and Ontario, as well as in Europe. Her work forms a commentary the nature of the audience and its role in performances, and often involves technology and new media.
The performance will be conducted in both French and English, everyone is encouraged to attend.
