Get in Gear for Third Space Gallery’s Fundraiser ‘Midnight Masquerade’ December 31st 2010
Saint John’s only artist run centre making a comeback to the city’s contemporary arts scene
Third Space Gallery is proud to announce a triumphant re-emergence to Saint John’s art scene for 2011. The past few years have seen the gallery go through a period of transition, hampered by shaky funding and the lack of an easy to access permanent exhibition space. The gallery has recently had to give up its most public face — its window frontage on Charlotte Street.
But now armed with new and returning Saint John artistic talent on its Board of Directors – including exciting emerging artists Sara Griffin and Gillian Dykeman – Third Space is back on solid footing. The gallery has secured a base of operations on Princess Street, and is in the process of searching for more venues to continue to expose the public to contemporary Canadian and international art.
Artist run centres are non profit entities, providing contemporary artists with an outlet to have their work seen without the pressure of commercial expectations. It’s also an important platform to engage and challenge the public’s conception of art. Third Space is one of four artist run centres in the province, and the only one in the Port City.
In one form or another, Third Space Gallery has been on the Saint John arts scene for five years. To celebrate its bright future, the centre is holding a party to usher in the new era in style. Midnight Masquerade will be a New Year’s Eve bash, taking place at the Prince William Ballroom at 115 Prince William Street, on December 31st. Dancing tunes will by provided by Saint John’s finest: Gary Flanagan, Adam Mowery and his Giants of Industry, reversing falls and DJ Fred.
To prepare for the big night, a pay-what-you-can mask making workshop will be held at Third Space Gallery Headquarters at 42 Princess Street (3rd floor–through Brits and up the stairs x3) on Monday December 27th, 7pm. Supplies and tips will be provided, but everyone is invited to bring their own personal touches, friends and refreshments.
