Edith Dakovic
September 17 to October 29, 2010
The Mer-made Products series is compromised of inflatable, silicone rubber sculptures shaped in the form of flotation devices for either water safety or recreation – Life-rings, Water wings, Air Mattresses, etc. The surface of these rubber “Hybrids” is canvas-textured but resemble human skin, complete with all its markings- beauty marks, moles with little hairs, veins shimmering from “under the skin” and all have either a Band-aid or a traditional maritime tattoo.
The rubber sculptures and 2-D works of the Mer-made Products series are playful yet disturbing. The light-boxes and video pieces tend to be mesmerizing and awe inspiring. This wry series speaks of our fragility and neediness but also points to our brutality and endless consumerism. The photographic light boxes and video work metaphorically play with the notion of the “beauty in nature”. The more we actually look at the work the more we are controlled with the uneasy reality of aspects of daily life.
