ARTIST PRESENTATIONS: JO COOK, SATURDAY MARCH 3, 1PM FREE
WESLEY MULVIN, MONDAY MARCH 5, 8PM FREE
Tales from the Cyclops Library expands the collection of two previous book arts exhibitions, (self)Publish or Perish at Open Space, Victoria, BC and Cyclops Dreams at Access Artist Run Centre, Vancouver. For this exhibition at Third Space Gallery, artist Jo Cook has added books from Europe and Central Europe acquired during her residency in the Czech Republic. Artists from Saint John and the Maritimes have added their publications to the mix. The result is a vast array of comics, artists books, zines, pamphlets and manifestoes that will be displayed in a specially designed reading room that encourages visitors to spend time browsing and reading.
Jo Cook is a visual artist, writer and curator. As Florentine Perro she is the founding editor of Perro Verlag Books by Artists, publishing original and independent voices of both established and emerging artists whose work combines, or crosses, or messes up traditional genres.
In the Projects Room: unBuilt, by Wesley Mulvin
unBuilt is a series of sketches, specifications, photographs, finished drawings and maquettes for exhibition proposals — both real and imagined. In the process of working on submissions for various public art competitions — while keeping in mind the parameters of the submission requirements — Mulvin imagines other possibilities that purposefully ignore the parameters.
Tales from the Cyclops Library received generous project assistance from the Canada Council for the Arts (celebrating 50 years in 2007, visit www.50.canadacouncil.ca/) and the City of Saint John Community Arts Program. Additional support comes from the Telegraph Journal, Picaroons Brewing, T4G, Punch Productions and the Province of New Brunswick.
Both exhibitions continue until April 14, 2007.
