I fooled the children of the revolution • McCleave Suitcase Gallery •Cartoon Meat
On exhibit from June 24 – August 5, 2006
SAINT JOHN, NB: Third Space Gallery is thrilled to present three
exhibitions that focus on the temporary, the transient and the
unstable, and the flexibility of meaning.
IN THE GALLERY: Former Saint John and current Brooklyn, NY-based
artist Michael Buckland with his installation I fooled the children of
the revolution, an exhibition comprised of painted graphics, video,
and custom made beach balls. The imagery, painted directly on gallery
walls, includes angry militant cattle, the intersection of black power
with a seventies sitcom, illustrations from a do-it-yourself weapons
manual, and various exhortations to action.
Since a very young age Michael Buckland has tried to be as much as
possible like the people he saw on television, eventually leading him
to become an artist. He has shown his work and performed in various
venues in North America, Europe and Asia. He currently lives in
Brooklyn, NY.
IN THE WASHROOMS: artist Shannon Sberna will present her Cartoon Meat
intervention in the two public washrooms of the Brodie Building.
Originally from Ohio and currently based in New York, Sberna studied
at the Cleveland Institute of Art, with major studies in metalwork.
She has participated in various group shows but her major focus is
currently jewelry design (badshannon.com).
IN THE VAULT: The McCleave Suitcase Gallery (www.mccleavegallery.ca)
is a nomadic gallery in a suitcase. This year the original, as well as
two “reproduction suitcases”, are on extensive tours throughout
Commonwealth countries. The cozy Third Space Vault will be turned into
a reading and viewing room for the work of seventeen Canadian artists.
Merchandise is available. The McCleave Suitcase Gallery is a
curatorial project of Michael McCormick, who received his BFA from the
University of Guelph. When not travelling extensively he alternates
his time between Halifax, NS and Dawson City, YK.
The only artist-run centre for contemporary art in Saint John, Third
Space Gallery is an interdisciplanary exhibition, performance and
production space committed to representing local, regional and
national professional contemporary artists. Admission to the galleries
is free.
