Inside-Out

INSIDE / OUT: Christopher Flower & Jasper van den Brink
Gallery Hop opening with Christopher Flower August 18 at 8 PM
Jasper van den Brink opens August 25 at the Saint John Arts Centre
Exhibition continues to October 7, 2006
SAINT JOHN, NB: Third Space Gallery is thrilled to present a two-artist exhibition that focuses on video art and specifically how the intersection of camera, subject and projection affects our perception of reality.
IN THE GALLERY: Montreal-based artist Christopher Flower launches the exhibit INSIDE / OUT with an encompassing, intriguing video installation. Christopher Flower produces videos that create autonomous worlds-within-worlds, using banal household objects to create playful narratives that investigate physical improbabilities. Using a deceptively simple technique, Flower effectively creates videos that challenge the known laws of physics.
Christopher Flower received his BFA from the University of Lethbridge in 2000 and his MFA from Concordia University in 2003. He lives and works in Montréal, except when tree-planting in Saskatchewan. He will attend the opening beginning at 8 PM during the Gallery Hop on August 18, 2006.
ARTIST PRESENTATON: As part of INSIDE / OUT Dutch artist Jasper van den Brink will launch a series of workshops with an artist talk on Tuesday, August 15 at 7 PM at Third Space Gallery. Van den Brink lives and works in Amsterdam, the Netherlands and will be in Saint John for three weeks creating new work, meeting with members of the film and video community and setting up a video installation at the Saint John Arts Centre. Evening presentations continue Wednesday and Thursday, August 16 and 17 at Third Space Gallery beginning at 7 pm. A video editing workshop takes place Saturday, August 19 at Hit!Media, 179 Prince William Street. His exhibition opens August 25th.
Jasper Van den Brink studied from 1991 to 1996 at the Gerrit Rietveld Art Academie Amsterdam and in 1994 at The School of the Chicago Art Institute. He exhibits regularly across Europe and has been commissioned to make work for the Dutch Government (2006, Dutch Flag), the Ministry of Finance (Special Euro Coin), the DVD Big Art for Children (2005, Bouncing Balls) and Mediamatic (2004 Tunnel Vision). In 2002 he was awarded the 2nd position of the Prix de Rome in the Film & Video category for his work Self Portrait, which will be installed in Saint John.
The exhibition INSIDE / OUT received funding from the Canada Council for the Arts, ARTS NB and the NB Arts Development Branch, as well as the Dutch Embassy of Canada. Sponsors include the Telegraph Journal, AVIS car rentals, Punch Productions, Picaroons Brewery, Hit!Media, Continental Drift Film Festival, T4G, the Saint John Arts Centre, Kent Lines and Glidden Paints.

The work of Jasper van den Brink is based on a quasi-scientific approach: that of finding intriguing and indeed elegant technological solutions to problems that do not exactly need solving. Behind this playful approach, however, is a concern with disconnecting the camera from the eye, to create an awareness of our ways of looking.
